RESPONSIBILITIES: The Cook prepares and cooks meals for children, volunteers, and staff. This position works in a professional manner with Head Start staff, parents, children, and outside community monitors such as the local Public Health Food Inspector and the CACFP program monitors.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
• Prepare breakfast, lunch, and snacks service meals following standardized menus approved by
the Registered Dietician.
• Follow established health and food safety procedures including monitoring and ensuring
appropriate food temperatures.
• Maintain proper sanitary procedures in accordance with Head Start Performance Standards, Rule
3, and county public health requirements.
• Compile kitchen consumable supply inventories and complete paperwork according to CACFP
requirements outlined in SOP’s.
• Attend scheduled pre-services, in-services, First Aid and CPR courses, trainings, and staff
meetings.
• Assist with recruitment efforts of Head Start children annually.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
• Must be 18 years of age or older.
• CPR and First Aid certification or willingness to obtain within 90 days.
• Experience as a cook preparing food in an institutional setting or training and experience that
demonstrates the knowledge and skill required to perform the required duties.
• Must have or be willing to attend and complete Food Manager Certification Course.
• Knowledge of health and sanitation rules in food service.
KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES AND SKILLS:
• Effective written and verbal communication skills and demonstrated interpersonal skills.
• Ability to work as part of a team.
• Ability to follow problem-solving and conflict resolution strategies.
• Knowledge and understanding of issues faced by low-income people in the nine-county service
area.
• Ability to travel within and out of the service area for meetings, workshops, and conferences.
• Reliable, regular attendance.
• Must complete a satisfactory background check.
• Must have satisfactory completion of medical exam and health screenings within 90 days of
employment as requested per Head Start regulations.
